Virtual Field Station
Euroturtle
Introduction - Scenario and Tasks
  • Scenario:The virtual conservation volunteer arrives by plane at the main airport and is met by the car from the Field Station and transferred to the South of the island. At a later stage, other destinations will be available.
On arrival at the Field Station, an aerial view site map will be available and some exploration of the site will be possible. When the Office is entered, instructions for tasks can be found on the main office desk. Initially, there will only be a few tasks, one of which will be a soil compaction survey on a sea turtle nesting beach frequented by tourists.
  • Sand Compaction Survey: The virtual conservation worker will be asked to plan out an investigation of sand compaction on a nearby nesting beach. All resources will be available from the office and by links to other websites. Suggestions on how to present it will also be given. Once the plan has been made, it can be submitted to the main office task desk and if it is approved, a password for the boat will be issued. The plan could be assessed by the local Tutor and the password emailed from EuroTurtle. EuroTurtle would also provide some suggestions for assessment (email request).
The boat can then be used to visit the beach to gather compaction samples (these are actual results from a real survey). These results can then be written up and submitted to tutors. The plan and completed write-up could be included as part of a student‘s coursework. e.g.A level and University modular Biology courses.
