Virtual Field Station
Euroturtle
Introduction - Design
  • The Virtual Field Station (VFS) is located on a mythical Eastern Mediterranean Island (Fouramos) well known for its Sea Turtle nesting beaches and outstanding natural beauty. It is a smallish island and becoming increasingly popular with tourists from Europe. The Island is decidedly Greek in style but with a Turkish flavour and influence. The island has one medium sized town served by good ferry connections and a small airport capable of taking short-haul holiday jets. The town has a good deep-water harbour and there is a water-sport and diving centre located near the town.
  • The sea turtle nesting beaches are located around the island on a number of beaches although the largest and most protected location is in the south of the island where the field station is located. The island has some low mountains and hosts a diverse selection of typically Eastern Mediterranean Fauna and flora. There is also a small population of the rare and protected Monk Seal. The Island also plays host to flotilla sailing boats and motor cruisers which are located at a purpose built marina on the NW corner of the island. Locals survive mainly on the tourist trade although Olives and mountain herbs provide a valuable export crop.
  • The Field Station is the headquarters of a dedicated Sea Turtle Conservation group known as the FMTP (Fouramos Marine Turtle Project). It is largely run by volunteers from European countries although there are strong links to the host country and to other local island environmental groups. The group monitor and protect the islands two species of sea turtle although not all of the beaches are protected by law. The FMTP operate at the site from May until October and the Field Station is closed during the winter months.
  • Much of the design of the Island and its Field station is based on actual locations from around the Mediterranean. The Field Station itself is closely modelled on an actual centre which is located near the beach and consists of accommodation for volunteers, a central office and field centre and a boat and car for access to nesting beaches.
