Fourana Airport: The runway has just been resurfaced and lengthened so it can accept short-haul jets from most European destinations. Over 100 flights per month are expected during the peak holiday (July) season : about 15,000 tourists will arrive by air during this month.
The majority of tourists come from the United Kingdom, Germany and Holland.
The airport is situated near to a sea turtle nesting beach and incoming flights approach directly over this beach. At present, there is no ban on night time arrivals or departures although the local sea turtle conservation groups (FMTP - Fouramos Marine Turtle Project) are recommending such a flight ban during the key nesting period (May - August). There is considerable local resistance to this ban.
