It has been estimated from data similar to that presented above that, on average in excess of 60,000 turtles are caught annually as a result of fishing in the Mediterranean Sea. Mortality rates have been calculated by research carried out both by fishing companies and by independent researchers: AGUILAR et al. (1992; DE METRIO & MEGALOFONOU (1988); GROOMBRIDGE (1989); MAS & GARCIA 1990; MAYOL (1990). Their research indicates that the mortality rates as a result of fishing are between 10% and 50% of the animals caught. Most of the turtles caught are in the juvenile phase of life with the majority being between 40cm and 50cm in length (CCL).
