  • Range:(source: Limpus in Bjorndal)
    • Widley distributed in tropical and subtropical waters.
    • Rarely nest in waters below 25 degrees C.
    • Near continental coasts and around islands.
    • Rare in temperate waters.
    • Along with hawksbill, the most tropical of turtles.
  • Population: (source: FAO)
    • Some estimated population figures shown above.
    • Many populations on the decline, mainly in Australasian region (100,000 green turtles per annum harvested for meat).
    • Near total egg harvesting in Indonesia and Malaysia. (Sarawak Turtle Islands).
    • Strong conservation in Sabah, Hawaii and Florida have seen some recovery.

I have seen your excellent web page of Euroturtle. I write you because I was in the Island of Bioko, Equatorial Guinea, Central-West Africa, doing the field work of that is going to be my Ph.D. Thesis (I hope in few months). I worked there with 4 sea turtle species nesting in 20 km black sand beaches at the South of this island. The species involved are: Chelonia mydas (the main), Dermochelys coriacea, Eretmochelys imbricata and Lepidochelys olivacea. Because of the low tagging effort that we applied I just could perform a rough estimation of the female green turtles nesting there in the pic of the season. They were around 500 (300-1000). However we know that this species, as well as the leatherback, nest there throughout the year. The leatherbacks nesting there each year may be around 200-400 females, olives around 50 and some hawksbills.

For further information you can see the next reference:

Tomas, J.; Castroviejo, J. & Raga, J.A. (1999). Sea turtles nesting in the South of Bioko Island (Equatorial Guinea). Marine Turtle Newsletter 84: 4-6
or see our 2 presentations included in the Proceedings book of the 19th Annual Sea Turtle Symposium.

I have seen that this nesting area is not included in your Chelonia distribution map. Because this place seems to be the second nesting area in importance in the Atlantic coast of Africa for this species (following the one in Bijagos Arquipelago), I write for you to consider to include it in your web page.

    Thanks for your attention.
    Best Regards,
    Jesus

05/07/01 - Albin Mauritz in Kuwait, carrying out a project on Hawksbills and Green Sea Turtles, reported their presence/nesting on the islands (unconfirmed).
