| Esmeralda, a
Green sea turtle, was fitted with a transmitter to her head as she finished
laying her eggs on Esentepe beach on the night of 19/7/99 She made her first satellite transmission next day at 16.24. She had traveled 27.67 kms (17.19 miles). |

| Esmeralda has swum off our maps - new ones are coming very soon!!! | ||
| New maps now ready plus an aerial view of Cyprus. More aerial shots soon. | ||
| HINT: when plotting a point on the map using the transparency, lay a ruler between the grid and the map and lay horizontally for the latitude. Plotting the longitude now becomes much easier when you remove the transparency sheet as you can reference the point against the ruler. | ||
| Problem - membership form not working - now OK Sorry!!! | ||
| Esmeralda
is on the move again - new positions but she is off the map again -
new maps coming as soon as possible! 06/10/99 New maps now available |
||
| Problems - it seems that the membership page does not work as well as it could and the problem may well be on the University computer. If you cannot get it to work, please send details by email. Thanks. | ||
| It seems we are not the only group to have named a green turtle Esmeralda - Dr. Michael Ierides, the secretary general of CYMEPA (Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association) also had a naming competition in 1992. After 7000 entries, the name Esmeralda emerged as the most popular. They have now adopted Esmeralda as their mascot name - we at Greentrack hope that we can share the name with CYMEPA for the benefit of Education and Conservation of sea turtles. (we gather that esmeralda is derived from the Latin for green) | ||
| New updated maps and hints for plotting (see instructions) - also a few new updated positions. | ||
| Esmeralda is
still off the Libyan coast and sending dive data back but no position
fixes, so the scientists in Cyprus are still hopeful that she will eventually
send back some more data for plotting.
The maps have now been redrawn so they fit on two sheets of A4 and the short satellite data list adjusted for them. New grids are also available. These maps are much easier to use and all the plots can be placed in a much shorter time. The old maps are still available for those wishing to plot all of her positions. Please tell us how you have got on. |
||
| Esmeralda is no longer moving so we have now plotted out her progress on a summary map - if you wish to see this, click here. | ||
| Esmeralda has appeared out of the blue after 2 months of no fixes. She appears to be in the same spot as before - lets hope we get more fixes in the future! | ||
